Gold Standard PBL: Student Voice and Choice

Although student’s voices are important, there is a point where it crosses a line. Teachers must be able to hold a good balance to keep the classroom in order.
Yes, students have a voice but there should be restrictions. Students need to understand the boundaries that educators set and respect them.
We should give students restricted choice, so they do not get overwhelmed with options and will increase learning to the highest degree.
Of course student choice/voice is highly important when wanting to involve a student in their learning but there are lines they must not cross and the educator must help students understand.
I think that it is very important for students to know that they have a voice in the classroom, but I agree that it should be limited and students should know that there is some things that should not be said.
Allowing the students to speak there mind can help others. Because get others to realize and see its okay to speak your mind.
I took note that voice and choice should be limited at times and to provide scaffolding! These are 2 important strategies that are not as obvious as considering the purpose or knowing your students interests.
Although giving students a voice and a choice can motivate learning, it is important for teachers to create boundaries so that the required goals can be met.
I never really considered there being a right and wrong way to introduce PBL in the classroom, but I can see that despite there being many ways to go about it there are also times in which it may not be the best method. There are also times when the teacher should have more say over the students it just depends on how well you know your students.
I like this as my teaching style has always been centered around students. I like to teach what students are interested in so if the like turtles I can find books for them to read about turtles or have math problems about turtles. I also like the idea of having set things you need to do as a teacher but letting the students choose which comes first. This still allows for student voice/choice.
PBL Works explains why voice and choice is important for students. I must agree that when students have a choice it allows for them to be more open minded and it allows students to be more motivated. Students having a voice and choice allows for a better outcome when it comes to group work or learning.
I think this article gives a lot of information. I agree with the part that student voices and choices should be limited. We should know where a student can cross the line when given these opportunities.
Talking about how teachers take the time to learn about their students is important.
This article is understandable as it says how giving a voice to a student keeps them engaged and active learners. There needs to be a balance between the students' decisions and the educators' class learning goals.
teachers and students need to work together to be able to mae a classroom work smoothly.
If students voice their concerns, a teacher must monitor them. Students need to be comfortable in the classroom in order for them to be the most successful.
As students voice their concerns and opinions as teachers it is our job to monitor them. Having control over the irrational words and wants of students is what the main objective is.
Allowing students to communicate their opinions and ideas can make them feel more at comfort while also increasing student involvement. However, there must be a balance where the educator maintains control for the classroom to be a safe environment for both students and teachers.
Overall, I think this article is saying that students have a voice and opinion but as teachers, we need to know where to draw the line with that because you don't want students to try and control the class either. It's important to set those boundaries of it is a time and place to voice your opinions, thoughts, or concerns but we have to be smart in doing so.
The teachers and students have to work together to make a change and help for the success for the students.
Students and teachers have to advocate for the success of the student. There are people who are just there and students will need help to pus for them,
When you allow students to advocate for themselves and speak their mind it can provide positive learner engagement.
I really liked how this article mentioned that there needs to be a balance of allowing students to voice their thoughts or opinions but only when it is appropriate and not letting them have to much control. there needs to be a balance and a structure to it.
I enjoyed how this article talked about healthy restriction of sharing their voice. It stated that sometimes too much choice is not a good thing, and although students need to share their voices, they also need structure and guidance while doing so.
Giving students the opportunity to speak their minds and ideas can make them feel more comfortable and can provide positive learner engagement. I love that Mike said, "make it more about what they care about". This is so true students need to know learning can be fun instead of miserable.
Allowing students to use their voice and ideas can provide positive learner engagement and choosing is one of the best ways to introduce PBL.
Allowing for students to speak their mind and ideas can provide positive encouragement through each student. It allows for students to feel welcome in the classroom.
When students are able to share their voice it makes the learning environment better for each student. It is important for teachers to learn about their students.
I definitely think that student's voices are both influential and something that makes the learning experience more enjoyable and impactful for the student.
Choices are the best way to introduce the PBL into the classroom. Students will choose what interests them and what they think they may be most successful in. This leads to their engagement and learning as they know why they are solving this specific problem. Using interests to guide learning can make the biggest impact for an educator.
In this article ,disscussing how teachers take part in learning about their students is incredible, the bond and connect they make to offer a safe space for students to talk about issues and concerns.
I love that the article mentions that educators should find out what students are interested in. We can use this to teach seemingly unrelated topics. Students should know that learning can be fun! This starts with a teacher who cares!
I can see the times in the student having a voice is more valued.
The ideas presented in this short article are really something of value. I have definitely noticed a shift in my time as a student in the education system where student voice is becoming more valued. And, as I have more opportunities to share my thoughts and ideas, I feel more empowered and engaged in my learning. I hope to see more educators incorporating student voice and choice into the classroom.

Mar 27, 2021Hi Cortney,
I am a believer in empowering our students by hearing their voice. When I meet my Kinders, they pick their favorite color, then they take that color dot and go pick their seat. Parents look at me like I've lost my mind but I explain to them, the first day is full of jitters, this however takes some of that away. I have allowed them to decide where they will sit (and I have flexible seating options they also pick from) and for a 5 year old this is huge! By doing this small thing at the very start, my Tiny Humans aren't so jittery and are excited. It's important to hear their voice at any age.
